Go Development

# Keep Go service work bounded when dependencies slow down.

A request can finish at the edge while its background work keeps consuming resources. We improve defined Go service paths by making cancellation, concurrency and external effects explicit, then verify what happens when callers leave or dependencies fail.

THE ENGAGEMENT

## Trace the work from request to completion.

1. **Map the path** Identify callers, shared state, external effects and completion signals.
2. **Bound execution** Agree deadlines, worker limits and which actions can safely retry.
3. **Verify and hand over** Exercise the failure paths and document operational ownership.

DIRECT ANSWER

Wavect implements scoped changes in Go services, covering request contracts, concurrent work, dependency handling and observability. Acceptance focuses on the changed behavior in your actual runtime and deployment conditions.

Best for

- Teams improving an existing Go API or worker
- Services with unclear cancellation or retry behavior

Consider another approach

- Only connecting existing business tools
- A language rewrite without an identified delivery need

## Choose a behavior the existing service must preserve or change

We inspect the affected packages, request or job schema, authorization and downstream contracts. Inputs include a reproducible example, dependency versions and the current deployment target. A bounded endpoint or worker change can proceed without redesigning the whole system. Work that primarily connects established business applications belongs to [API Integration](/services/api-integration/).

## Give concurrent work a deadline and an owner

We trace how request context reaches downstream calls and how goroutines stop or complete. Go’s [context package](https://pkg.go.dev/context) carries cancellation and deadlines; application code and dependencies must respond appropriately. The scope can cover worker limits, shared-state access, channel ownership and shutdown.

Retry decisions depend on the operation’s effects and the downstream contract. Cancellation does not reverse a completed write. Uncertain outcomes need reconciliation or a stable operation identity before another attempt.

## Illustrative check: a canceled request does not leave unowned work

A test dependency delays its response while the caller cancels. The agreed service path propagates cancellation, stops eligible work, releases resources and records the outcome. A separate retry fixture checks that an acknowledged business operation is not repeated accidentally.

This is an illustrative acceptance design, not a reported client result. We record limits for dependencies that cannot cancel and any effects that already occurred.

## Test the relevant paths and describe what those checks establish

Meaningful checks cover errors, concurrent access and shutdown. The [Go race detector](https://go.dev/doc/articles/race_detector) helps with executed paths; a clean run does not establish that all possible races are absent. Profiling and load tests use an agreed environment and workload.

The published [Polity case](/case-studies/polity/) lists Go within a multi-service environment where our work covered QA, review and delivery modernization. It supports that engineering context, not a claim that Wavect originally built every Go service.

## Leave maintainers with code and an explanation of runtime behavior

We deliver the scoped changes, module and build notes, contract fixtures, configuration requirements and observations for the affected paths. Logs or metrics should explain cancellation, failures and queued work without exposing sensitive payloads. Your team retains the repository and names the service owner. Broader deployment workflows belong to [DevOps & Platform Engineering](/services/devops-platform-engineering/); continuing regression work can use [Software QA](/services/software-quality-assurance/).

## Questions before you start

### Will you replace our backend with Go?

Only if assessment establishes a useful reason and a separately agreed migration plan. This service can start with a small change in an existing Go codebase.

### Can every failed request be retried?

No. An operation may already have changed an external system. We distinguish safe retries, duplicate protection and outcomes that require checking before another attempt.

### Does cancellation stop everything immediately?

No. It signals that work should stop; actual behavior depends on implementation and the downstream API. We test the supported path and document what continues or has already completed.

### What performance result can we expect?

We agree latency, throughput or resource measurements for a representative workload before implementation. Results apply to that setup, with tradeoffs and remaining bottlenecks recorded; no universal capacity is promised.

## Continue with the right scope

- [Connect established systems](/services/api-integration/)
- [Extend regression coverage](/services/software-quality-assurance/)
- [Improve deployment workflows](/services/devops-platform-engineering/)
