What does a fractional CPO actually do?

A fractional CPO leads product for a company that does not yet need (or cannot yet afford) a full-time chief product officer. The work is product: roadmap, prioritization, and the customer-discovery cadence. It does not own engineering, which is the fractional CTO’s job. The shape is one to two days per week, on a retainer that cancels weekly, with a clear handover when the full-time CPO is in the chair. It fits post-PMF, when the founder is ready to delegate the product call. At Wavect it is the product-only slice of our combined CTPO role, and two founders are on every engagement.

Working with Wavect in Tirol

Tirol is the regional product-leadership page. Wavect GmbH is registered in Ampass and Kevin is based in Innsbruck, but the operating model covers teams across the region.

Startup.Tirol supports research transfer, startup development, market entry, and scaling. Cluster IT Tirol spans software and applied digital technology across industries. That creates many possible product contexts, so we refuse the lazy line that there is one “typical Tirol startup.”

The CPO gap is narrower: the product already has market evidence, but roadmap, discovery, and prioritization do not have an owner. We take that product authority. We do not take engineering; that belongs to the CTO.

// LOCAL FIT

Where a product-leadership gap appears across Tirol

These situations can happen in a startup or an established company.

An established business is turning a service into a product

A portal, platform, connected service, or internal system is becoming something customers or teams depend on. Requests arrive from every side, but no product owner protects the outcome.

A technology startup has traction and too many possible next moves

The team has customer evidence. What it lacks is a repeatable discovery cadence and a roadmap that says no to attractive distractions.
// FIRST 30 DAYS

The first 30 days across a Tyrolean product team

We begin by identifying whose problem the product is solving and which evidence is currently missing.

  1. Map customers and commitments
    Review users, buyers, sales promises, existing interviews, usage, roadmap debt, and stakeholder requests.
  2. Define the next product proof
    Choose the business and customer outcome the next quarter must establish, then cut work that does not support it.
  3. Create the decision cadence
    Install interviews, prioritization criteria, roadmap reviews, and a handover-ready product narrative.
// ROLE CHECK

Product owner or technical owner?

The Fractional CPO owns post-PMF product direction. The Fractional CTO Tirol owns engineering and production. The Fractional CTPO combines both when splitting them would create a coordination tax.

Role and region navigation

Fractional CPO Tirol: regional questions

The role boundary, before the retainer.

We can own customer evidence, product outcomes, prioritization, and the roadmap. We do not prepare funding applications or promise approval. Technical architecture and delivery evidence belong to the Fractional CTO Tirol .
The Tirol page covers the wider region and regional operating context. Innsbruck is specific to Kevin’s local base and city-level workshops. The role, pricing, and two-founder model are the same.
