# What is Hivecoding? Community-led AI development

Hivecoding is an informal approach where a community suggests features, AI agents prepare code changes, and developers decide what ships.

**Hivecoding** connects community feedback with [AI coding agents](/glossary/ai-agents/). In the community-led sense used here, people contribute ideas, agents turn selected requests into code changes, and a developer directs the work. The guild analogy describes that shared effort: participants have different roles in building the same product.

## How hivecoding works in game development

Consider a developer who livestreams a game playtest. Viewers report bugs and ask for features. Agents can process the stream transcript and chat, group repeated requests, and draft tickets for a later coding session. This is an illustrative workflow:

1. **Collect feedback.** Keep the original comment or transcript timestamp with each request so the team can check its meaning.
2. **Find the useful requests.** Group duplicates and surface popular ideas. The developer chooses what fits the game, the available time, and the players who are missing from the stream.
3. **Define success.** Turn a request into a small [user story](/glossary/user-story/) with acceptance criteria. For example: a player can remap the jump button, and that setting survives a restart.
4. **Prepare changes.** Coding agents work on approved tickets in separate branches or worktrees. A bounded queue can run overnight, with limits on tool access, cost, and execution time.
5. **Review and playtest.** Run tests, inspect the code, and try the combined changes in the game. A developer approves the merge and release; the next playtest supplies fresh feedback.

The opportunity is a shorter feedback cycle. Players can see their suggestions become testable changes. Developers spend more of their attention on deciding what belongs in the product and checking how the pieces work together.

## Hivecoding, vibe coding, and multiple agents

[Vibe coding](/glossary/vibe-coding/) centres on prompting a model and judging the result by trying it. Multi-agent coding describes how work is divided among agents. Hivecoding, in this community-led sense, adds a source of direction: the people using or following the product. These practices can overlap. Running several agents alone does not create a community feedback loop.

## Where the workflow needs care

Popularity is one input to product decisions. A loud chat can favour visible features while overlooking accessibility, save-file compatibility, or bugs affecting quieter users. Transcript summaries also need checking: a joke or repeated message can become a misleading ticket.

Treat public feedback as input to analyse, with no authority to change an agent’s permissions or release rules. Before unattended work, define which files and tools agents may use. Stop the queue when checks fail or the budget is reached. Separate branches reduce direct editing conflicts, but the merged result still needs testing.

Count accepted improvements alongside review time, rework, regressions, and AI cost. Ticket totals measure activity; their value depends on scope and what reaches players successfully. Overnight code still needs the same [production-readiness checks](/software-development-guide/vibe-coded-prototype-to-production/) as code written during the day.

## What hivecoding means for developers

More implementation can be delegated, while product judgement and integration remain deliberate work. Someone must resolve contradictory requests, write useful acceptance criteria, and decide when a change is ready. Wavect’s recommendation is to start with a small, reviewable queue and expand it only when the results justify the extra work. For help designing that workflow, explore our [AI development services](/services/artificial-intelligence/) or [discuss your agent workflow](/contact/).

**Terminology note.** The name has several uses. [DevSwarm describes HiVE as High Velocity Engineering](https://devswarm.ai/blog/high-velocity-engineering-hive-coding-vs-vibe-coding/). [Owen Barnes’s Hive Coding project](https://github.com/owenb/hivecode) is a collaborative AI design canvas. This entry uses the community-feedback meaning and does not attribute the livestream example to either project. Sources checked on 12 October 2026.

// FAQ

## FAQs

### What is hivecoding in plain English?

Here, hivecoding means building with community input and AI coding agents. People suggest improvements, agents help turn selected requests into changes, and developers decide which changes are ready to release. It is an informal label with several uses.

### How can agents use a livestream transcript?

They can extract feature requests and bug reports, group duplicates, and draft tickets linked to the original comments. A developer checks the summaries and priorities before the approved tasks enter the coding queue.

### Is hivecoding the same as vibe coding?

The terms describe different aspects of a workflow. Vibe coding focuses on prompting and trying generated software. Community-led hivecoding connects user feedback with selected development tasks. Multiple agents can support either approach.

### Can hivecoding agents work overnight?

They can work through a bounded queue of approved tasks while the developer is away. Set cost and time limits, isolate changes, and stop on failed checks. Review the combined result before release. Unattended coding does not imply unattended deployment.

### Does a high ticket count prove higher productivity?

Ticket count alone is insufficient because tasks vary in size and difficulty. Track accepted improvements, review time, rework, regressions, and AI cost to judge whether the workflow produces useful progress.
