# CPO

Chief Product Officer

The executive accountable for what gets built, what does not, and whether the resulting product actually moves the metric the business needs.

Last reviewed: 2026-05-24 by [Kevin Riedl](/team/kevin-riedl/) [wiki ↗](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q139796365)

A CPO owns the product. Not the design, not the engineering, not the marketing, but the question of what to put in front of customers and in what order. The role exists because every shipping decision is a choice not to ship something else, and at scale that choice needs an owner. Combine it with the [CTO](/glossary/cto/) remit in one person and you get a [CTPO](/glossary/ctpo/); keep it part-time and you get a [fractional CPO](/glossary/fractional-cpo/).

A good CPO is fluent in three languages: customers (what hurts), engineers (what is possible), and the executive team (what moves the P&L). When one of those three is missing, you get product debt: shipped features no one bought, or revenue features no one shipped.

Worked example of the missing-language failure: a CPO hired straight from a sales-led org is fluent in P&L and customers but cannot read what engineering tells them about cost. They commit the roadmap to a quarter of “quick wins” that are quietly six months of platform work, the dates slip, and trust erodes on both sides. The mirror-image failure is the engineer-turned-CPO who can scope anything but cannot say which feature actually moves revenue. The job is the translation between all three, and weakness in any one shows up as the wrong thing getting built confidently.

The honest trade-off and the common mistake: founders reach for a dedicated CPO too early. Pre- [PMF](/glossary/pmf/) the role is overkill, because the founder’s own customer intuition is the most valuable product asset in the company and cannot be delegated. The work gets absorbed by the founder or a CTPO until the engineering team is large enough that deciding what to build next is a full-time job. Before that point, hiring a CPO mostly adds a layer between the founder and the customer, which is the opposite of what an early-stage product needs. ## FAQs

### What is the difference between a CPO and a head of product?

Title hierarchy. A CPO sits on the executive team and reports to the CEO. A head of product usually reports to a CPO, COO, or CEO without the C-suite seat. The work overlaps; the decision authority and board exposure do not.

### Can a CTO double as a CPO?

Yes, and the resulting role is called a CTPO. It works well pre-PMF and breaks down once the engineering org is too big for one person to manage and prioritise simultaneously.
